Battered Women Killing their Batterers

I know, this is a very peppy topic for Valentine's day. Actually, it's all about when Valentine's day goes wrong and people who supposedly love each other create a relationship of abuse and control instead of safety and trust. So, I am working in the Civil Justic Law clinic at school and one type of case we work on are clemency cases for battered women who kill their batterers. Now, I think that people who kill others, regardless of whether its a random person on the street or their best friend should be brought to justice for their actions. At the same time, statistically women who kill their batterers (aka men who beat them regularly, rape them, break their bones, threaten their life, threaten their children, cut them, put guns in their mouth and play russian roulette) get MORE or the same time as serial rapist and serial killers!!! Isn't there something wrong with this picture? A woman acting in self-defense because she truly believes she will never be able to escape the torture gets more time than anyone else???

It's depressing to think about.... God help us.

Home again home again jiggity jig

So, I was in Cleveland this past weekend and Joe asked me to update my blog -- here it is! I was in India over winter break and had a really good time with my family. It's weird to think that it is the last real Christmas vacation (aka 1 month off) I will get in a looong time. Now, it's on to the real world....sigh.

Going to India was really good but also challenging. We went as tourist, which was very different from a Global Project. In a few words, I would say that the primary difference was that we complained a whole lot more about small things. At the same time, I saw a lot of sites that I just didn't have the time to see the last time I was in India - some highlights were the Taj Mahal, spending a night in a house boat in Kumarakom, shopping in Delhi and Cochin, the beautiful beaches of Kerala, and of course a lot of family =).

In the process of traveling, I made a decision about IJM - namely, that I do not believe that I will be doing a fellowship with them this next year. It was a hard decision to contemplate turning down, should it be offered to me, but I don't believe its what I should be doing next year. Of course, I am still open to God changing my mind but that's where I'm at right now.

Last weekend I went to Cleveland and it was so great! I saw tons of people that I haven't seen since the summer and had missed being around. I even got to play with baby Charlotte! Annnnd Wayne got me a GPS system for Christmas (very cool)!

Anyhow, it's time to learn about securities regulation ....

Finally, I can log into my own blog! I forgot my username and then Google took over blogspot, in its quest to take over the whole world and ...anyways, I'm back!

It's fall break and I'm being extremely lazy.

It is a unique and somewhat stressful time in my life - but I am glad to be living it right now...
